We came out flat and asleep the first 20
minutes and found ourselves down 3-0 to
MI. The 2nd half we woke up and played
our game as our players really stepped
up their game. Miranda was just
exceptional tonight...reminded me a lot
of Gibson Bardsley as everything she
touched turned to gold (shot on frame,
assist, a corner awarded). Thought our
"D" really was strong the last 40...put
a lot of pressure on, won 50/50's, and
aggressive play put us in the driver
seat with some chances to take the "W".
This game will do us wonders going into
playoff time...coming back 3-0 and
playing with heart. That is good to
see! I think Brittany will be ok...she
is tough and will be ready. Lindor,
Kiki, Taylor, and Claire filled in that
backline well. We are starting the 3rd
half now.....the fun and the excitement
begins...all the hard work from August
goes into next week. Three wins to
state...one at a time. Lets bring our
"A" game and strive for our 80.

Team good soccer tonight although we
tied you came to play , we new M-I would
come at us and they did it was just like
Lake Washington game, all the team get
better as the season goes on, and that s
what happened tonight, I thought MI took
it to us in the first half, and we took
it to them the second half each team
both scored in there half, We do believe
we left some goals out there. Maddy
Hutchinson got are only goal tonight to
secure the tie.
Team This was a great season ending with
a nice record 12-2-2 very nice you
should be very proud of what you did. I
want to say you need to keep working
hard to make it to the next level some
of you didn't take it serious enough,
and found out at the end you didn't get
chosen for the playoff, you need to come
out every practice and game don't assume
you have a spot, and that also goes for
next year you need to be ready at
tryout. There are a lot of good players
out there the C team new players coming
in, so I would say be ready, and work
your tail off every practice and game.
Very good season Greg and myself want to
thank you for being good students, and
players we really enjoyed coaching you,
good luck in your club season.

C-Team Coach 10.25.2011
We tied Mercer
Island “Freshman” team last night 1-1.
We came out last night with our focus
intact. Maddie Jones was shut down at
every opportunity after almost scoring
early in the game. Mercer definitely did
their homework since we played their ‘C
team’ earlier in the season. Our offense
kept up the attack for 80 minutes last
night. Hannah Winfrey made some great
runs on the goal. Our midfielders kept
possession and were able to send the
ball through for shots on frame, as well
as had few of their own opportunities to
score. The defense was kept very busy
throughout the game. They held the
Mercer attack to minimal shots on. We
held possession and were able to move
the ball with linked passes and through
balls. We used our width wisely last
night driving the ball in for the cross
and scoring opportunities. We scored
late in the 2nd half with 8
minutes to go. Maddie Jones drove the
ball past the Mercer goalkeeper to
score. A few minutes later the ref
called a supposed foul in the box giving
Mercer a PK. Using our skills and
teamwork we outplayed the opponent last
night, unfortunately the scoreboard is
not a true reflection of how brilliantly
the girls truly played last night. Their
heart and passion for the game shone
through all 80 minutes of play. Well
done girls!
On a personal note:
I want to say how proud I am of all the
girls. They came together as a team to
face one opponent after another with
great sportsmanship, composure and
determination. This is a team that will
forever be in my memory as a team who
came together for a common goal to
overcome adversity with grace.
“The way a team plays as a whole
determines its success. You may have the
greatest bunch of individual stars in
the world, but if they don't play
together, the club won't be worth a
dime.”

Thank you for the
privilege of being able to work with
such awesome student-athletes and young

The Mount Si girls soccer team has been
looking for that one victory that could
kick start a strong run into the
postseason. Last night, they may have
just gotten it, and it was thanks to two
top midfielders.
Juniors Miranda Rawlings and Claire
Larsen each had a goal and an assist as
the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night
with a 2-0 shutout of the Bellevue
Wolverines which put Mount Si in third
just ahead of Bellevue in the standings.
The matchup was a preview of the first
round playoff contest these teams will
have next week in the KingCo Tournament,
but the third-place seeding could carry
with it a home game in the second round
if Mount Si wins that first-round game
next week.

countered though sending the ball into
our end with a few shots of their own.
Our defense settled into their positions
sending Bellevue down to our offensive
third where our mids and forwards linked
passes to keep their goalkeeper busy.
We played a tight defensive game,
shutting down Bellevue. We ended the
half 0-0. Second half Maddie Jones,
Hannah Winfrey and Kristin Moore all

Talking playoffs, Mount Si style...
Posted by
Rhett Workman on October 18, 2011

We’re getting now into the stretch
drive of the fall sports season and
with that, it’s time to talk
postseason possibilities. Here’s how
things shake down for all the Mount
Si fall sports teams at the moment.
Mount Si is sitting in third, just a
point ahead of Bellevue, but that
really doesn’t mean a whole lot,
since it appears those two will open
the playoffs with a first-round
matchup at the KingCo Tournament.
While the format for this year’s
event has not yet been announced,
based on past years, look for the
first round game to be at a neutral
site (likely to be Lake Washington),
a second game if necessary to be at
the home site of the higher-seed
team, then the winner of that game
would meet a Metro team for the
state berth. For Mount Si to make
state they would have to win all
three games. Lose at any point on
the way and it’s over.

We were challenged

Great game last night! We held our
positions and worked as a team. The
defense definitely did their job well.
Kaitlyn Lilliberg kept the defensive
line of Sara Pierce, Ali Barry, Malia
Barrett and Canara Heinke intact,
working together to stop Skyline’s
offense from too many scoring
opportunities. Hannah Wilhelm was key in
keeping the score 0-0. Her sense of the
goal and where to be were flawless last
night. It was great to have Canara back
in the lineup. She definitely had impact
on foiling the Skyline attacks in the
final minutes of the game. Once again
Malia Barrett was in the right place,
clearing out the defensive third in the
critical moments of the game. Our mids
had great positioning. Kristin Moore and
Emily Johns were able to contain the
Skyline mid field for most of the game.
The outside mids, Julie Foster,
Katherine Ramirez and Bailey Pfeiffer
stayed wide so we were able to
capitalize with the outside run to go to
goal. Maddie Jones and Hannah Winfrey
held the top of the field challenging
Skyline’s defense. Their ability to
lengthen the field with shots on frame
was in place last night. The team
stepped up to have one of our best games
of the season thus far. We still have 3
more challenging games to round out the

We battled wind in

focus at the start of the game. But by
the end of the first half we began to
play our game and our first goal from
Kelsey Seiser with an assist by Hannah
Winfrey was scored. Second half we came
back more composed with linked passes
which showed as we played in Ballard’s
half of the field for most of the game.
Ballard broke through our defense a few
times, but our defensive line quickly
rallied to stop them before any shots
could be made. Malia Barrett did an
outstanding job as stopper. She slowed
and/or stopped the attacks as well as
started several counterattacks. Kristin
Moore led the mid field in holding their
portion of the field very effectively
once some adjustments were made to the
lineup. Emily Johns really stepped up as
a center mid to help the team to contain
Ballard. In the second half Hannah
Winfrey put away a goal with excellently
executed pass from Maddie Jones. Kaitlyn

We struggled the
first half of the game to find our
groove ending the half 0-0. We took to
the field 2nd half and settled into our
level and style of play linking passes
and gaining possession more often. Our
mid field was able to create plays
sending our forwards and outside mids to
goal. Kaitlyn Lilliberg gained an assist
to open up the scoring. With Hannah
Winfrey and Malia Barrett following up
to put two more into the back of the
net. Our defense was able to keep
Roosevelt out of scoring range. While
our forwards kept their defense busy
blocking shots on frame. We finished
strong and we’re looking forward to
another strong opponent when we play
against Newport on Wednesday.

The girls dominated
the game against Mercer Island last
night even with Mercer bringing
additional players in at the half. We
played with better linked passes in the
second half. The grass was a little long
so it presented a challenge that the
girls overcame to maintain possession
throughout the game. Our midfielders
held the center not allowing Mercer
Island to get through to the defense
very often. Kristin Moore, Malia
Barrett, Ali Barry and Emily Johns were
instrumental in our attacks with Maddie
Jones, Hannah Winfrey, Emily Johns and
Kelsey Seiser in the forward position
getting shots on frame and eventually
scoring. Katherine Ramirez, Bailey
Pfeiffer, Brooke Potoshnik and Julie
Foster did an outstanding job in getting
crosses to the forwards and taking shots
on frame themselves. Our defense,
Kaitlyn Lilleberg, Sara Pierce, Nicole
Wood and Canara Heinke stayed focused so
when the ball did come through they were
able to clear it up to our forwards and
mids setting up attacks and
counterattacks. Overall we played with
determination to overcome the obstacles
to win a challenging game.

tonight...Brittany and Taylor stood out
in my mind as having quality

off the bench and played well. We had
moments of good play but, mirrored our
opponent too much which took away from
our style of play. 2nd half was not
quality and too much work out of our
back from lack of possession which was
in our favor the first 40 minutes.
Miranda was electric in the early going
which provided us a lot of extra push in
the attacking third. Alyssa and Maddy
both had fine finishes. We have to
control our attack more sound going

SKYLINE Game 10.28.10 - TIE 2-2
We played very well
keeping Skyline to one goal for the
first 60 minutes of the game. We
went to goal quickly with Celine Fowler
scoring off an assist from Celena
Wassink. Ronnie Wassink came in from the
outside to send one in to the far post
again with an assist from Celena. The
girls set the tone for a tough match
from the onset. It was a well played,
hard fought game. Our defense worked
well together to keep Skyline out of our
defensive third. The midfielders all the
way across held the line. The forwards
did well considering the wind they faced
second half.
I am extremely proud of
the girls and how they came together as
a team to face some really tough
opponents and overcome adversity time
and time again for a 9-3-1 season. The
girls showed composure and solid
sportsmanship throughout the season.
When other teams broke down physically
& mentally our girls stayed strong and
played strong. We had a fabulous season
and I, for one, am very sad that our
season is over.

Mount Si soccer survives,

October 30, 2010
Mount Si’s girls’ soccer team came into
last Thursday night’s game looking to
get another chance. This season has been
a struggle, largely because the offense
has been inconsistent at best, lacking
at worst. But Sophia Rouches’ goal that
won the game against Bellevue last
Tuesday gave Mount Si and their fans
hope that the Wildcats would have more
soccer on tap following their Senior
Night game with Mercer Island. Mount Si
didn’t make it easy on themselves, but
they found a way to win and now have a
chance to start anew.
Goals by Leslie Stevens, Hailey Conway
and Shanna Howland lifted the Wildcats
to a hard-fought 3-2 win which sealed up
the #4 slot in the league tournament;
game one is Monday night at 5:30 against
the Bellevue Wolverines at Juanita High
School.
Leslie (Stevens), (Hailey) Conway, and
Shanna's (Howland) goals tonight were
just great finishes and all from seniors
on senior night. Just puts the cap on a
great regular season finish,” said an
elated Mount Si coach Darren Brown to
the Wildcat soccer website. “We're
really excited for Monday's game against
Bellevue and to start the playoffs,”
said senior Haley Chase.
The Wildcats and the Islanders battled
hard in the first half, but neither team
found the back of the net and the two
teams went to halftime scoreless.

Rouches a heroine

10-26-10
By: Rhett Workman -
Sno-Valley Sports - Wednesday, October
27, 2010
The Mount Si Wildcat girls soccer team
has seen solid contributions from
freshman Sophia Rouches since she was
brought up from junior varsity. But
little did they know that Rouches would
be author of maybe the two most
important goals of this season. The
first came with seconds left in
regulation to help Mount Si beat Lake
Washington October 14; the second came
in last night’s game with Bellevue, and
not only did it save the game for the
Wildcats, it may have saved a season as
well.
Rouches, just like at Lake Washington,
scored with seconds left in regulation
to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Wildcats
to a huge 2-1 road win at Bellevue which
now sets them up well for their game
Thursday against Mercer Island. A win,
and possibly even a tie, will send Mount
Si to the KingCo Tournament.

Sophia Rouches has been a solid
player for coach Darren Brown's
Wildcats since the team called her
up from junior varsity earlier this
season. But the one thing Rouches
hadn't got yet was a goal. Last
Thursday, that all changed, and it
couldn't have come at a better time.
With the game tied 2-2 and likely
headed to overtime, a familiar spot
for Mount Si this season, Rouches
took a feed from Laura Barnes with
seconds remaining in regulation and
ripped it home to give the Wildcats
a stunning 3-2 win over Lake
Washington which combined with a
loss by Mercer Island catapulted
Mount Si into fourth place in the
league standings after having been
near the cellar.
Rouches was thrilled. "The other
team came together and we knew we
needed to push for another goal so I
came through," she said.

played well and appreciated her
intensity. Miranda worked hard as usual
and as well created many chances during
the match. I thought overall, Barnes
played a key role tonight. She was good
defensively and got forward to
contribute on two key goals this
evening.....first the header off a
Rawlings feed
and then the nightcap feed to Sophia
Rouches in the closing minute to end the
match. Sophia really stepped up when we
needed a game winning goal and attacked
the box with a tremendous finish from
Barnes. That goal was a pure clutch
performance and always great to see from
a frosh whose play tonight was just a
real positive contribution. Breanne
Beckes attacked out of the back well
with air tight defensive play and runs
forward. Overall, a great game and
solid performance with another "W". 2
wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie to start the
2nd half.....we are mirroring that great
2008 run.....lets keep this rolling.

Mount Si's soccer

Sophia Rouches has been a solid
player for coach Darren Brown's
Wildcats since the team called her
up from junior varsity earlier this
season. But the one thing Rouches
hadn't got yet was a goal. Last
Thursday, that all changed, and it
couldn't have come at a better time.
With the game tied 2-2 and likely
headed to overtime, a familiar spot
for Mount Si this season, Rouches
took a feed from Laura Barnes with
seconds remaining in regulation and
ripped it home to give the Wildcats
a stunning 3-2 win over Lake
Washington which combined with a
loss by Mercer Island catapulted
Mount Si into fourth place in the
league standings after having been
near the cellar.
Rouches was thrilled. "The other
team came together and we knew we
needed to push for another goal so I
came through," she said.

Mount Si is now 4-5-1 overall and
2-5-1 in conference play. Liberty
remains undefeated in conference

Mount Si
senior forward Hailey Conway put the
Wildcats ahead at the 9-minute mark
with a goal, thanks to an assist by
senior defender Haley Chase.
Mount Si head coach Darren Brown
said the early goal prompted the

"I was pleased tonight by our possession
game. Thought we did a good job of
playing to feet and letting the game
come to us at our pace which was fun to
watch. We had a lot of girls step up
this evening....backline played great,
midfield did a good job of getting

forwards up top created some good
scoring chances and worked hard. We
reached our team goal tonight and have
started the 2nd half the way we have

This season is really taking into shape
a lot like our 2008 year where we went

Now....we are playing Mount Si soccer!
Much...much better performance this
evening from the ladies. Thought the
girls played real well and there was
good pressure on the ball. Bree and
Brit did a good job of getting forward
from the back. Our center mids did
great tonight.....Barnsey, Alyssa, and
Shawna had great games. Four players
stuck out in my mind tonight for
excellent performances......Weidenbach,
Chase, Conway, and Barnes. When we have
this kind of production....it becomes a
lot easier on our transition game. I am
real proud of tonight's effort. We
talked about our 2008 team tonight....we
started off the 1st half with a .500

the league title and finished strong
with a 6th place finish at state. We
can do this all over again.....lets keep

Mount Si girls'

By: Rhett Workman - Sno-Valley
Sports 09.22.10
Mount Si's girls
soccer team was looking to build off
a good win last Thursday at
Sammamish as they came home for
their league home opener last night
against LW. However, the Kangs had
other ideas.
Lake Washington did a nice job
pressuring Mount Si offensively, and
although the game went to OT, LW's
efforts were rewarded with a 1-0
win. Emma Holm scored for the Kangs
in the 86th minute as LW was able to
get a ball past Wildcat keeper
Courtney Cowan, who made several
spectacular saves in the second half
to keep the game scoreless to force
the overtime sessions. Fellow keeper
Carly Weidenbach also did a nice job
in the first half to keep the Kangs
at bay.
Mount Si's offense had a hard time
getting much going; they did have
several chances throughout the game
to get one on the board, but LW's
defense and goalkeeper were both up
to the challenge at all times.
The Wildcats drop to 3-2, 1-2 league
and will look to rebound against
Juanita tomorrow.

Conway's efforts especially noteworthy
is that coach Darren Brown notes in his

Without their top
player, the Mount Si girls' soccer team
last Saturday continued to follow the
theme which helped them win last
Thursday over Cedarcrest: strong team
play.
And like last Thursday, the Wildcats
used that to grab another win, this time
a 1-0 result over the Newport Knights in
the 3A/4A showcase. Hailey Conway scored
the lone goal of the contest for Mount
Si in the 60th minute; the goal was the
senior's second in as many games. Conway
also scored a goal in the 4-0 win over
the Red Wolves which opened the season
last Thursday.
Mount Si played without senior defender
Alexis Pearlstein, out with an ankle
injury she suffered in the win over
Cedarcrest.

We possessed well today in the
2nd half and our scoring opps
increased as the match went on.
Brittany played an excellent
game....physical, read the game
well, and did a great job
defending. Chase was great
in the air and held the central
back position well. Taylor
puts herself in good position
and denied any scoring chances
today by solid defending as
well. Jess, Barnes,
Alyssa, and Shawna did a great
job distributing and the 2nd
half was fun to watch as some
great plays off the ball
occurred. Breanne and
Claire had great runs and
supported the defense well.
Miranda was electric again at
her position....great creativity
in the attacking third.
Stevens had two great scoring
chances with one called back
but, I was very pleased with her
effort and proud of the way she
has been playing. Two more
shut outs for the
Weidenbach/Cowan
connection.....160 minutes and
counting. Well done Keeps!
Conway receives our player of

reasons.....getting our result
today by scoring in the 60th

on a previous foul and then
scoring before exiting.
You have to love Conway's
heart...she is a great leader!

Wildcat girls

By: Rhett

September 11, 2010
Mount Si's girls' soccer team
opened the season with a Valley
Cup showdown last Thursday night
against Cedarcrest. It was a
great night for the Wildcats
team, as they played very well
in beating their Valley rivals,
but Mount Si paid a big price in
the process, as they lost
arguably their most important
player to injury.
Four different players scored
for the Wildcats in the 4-0 win,
but the injury, to senior
defender Alexis Pearlstein, took
on the biggest focus, as that
could affect the Wildcats'
chances this season. Pearlstein,
who has verbally committed to
D-I Ball State for college next
year, collided with a Cedarcrest
player in the 30th minute and
hurt her ankle. Pearlstein
missed the rest of the game.
Wildcat coach Darren Brown is
confident his team can keep
going despite this huge loss.
"We're going to have to make do
without Lexi for a while, but we
have depth. We have 11 seniors
this year, they'll step up,"
Brown said.

The ladies started the season
off the way we talked about
tonight. We have big goals this
season and one of them being
getting our opportunities up
from last year with better
execution. It took us 20
minutes to get going but, the
play improved as the night went
on. Our 2nd half was much
better than our 1st as we
settled down and started playing
our game. Possession was much
better as well as our work rate
off the ball. Overall, a great
group effort with contributions
coming from our keepers,
backline, midfield, and up top.
Conway did an excellent job of
controlling the tempo and
possession as well as Miranda
with her pace which I could not
have asked for more. Stevens
was a spark off the bench and
played quality minutes. Our
entire midfield started working
together well and distribution
was solid. Bree's hustle and
runs forward were an asset for
us but, what I really
appreciated was her play on both
sides of the ball and recovery.
Jess did a great job of reading
the game and her pace throughout
the match was evident. Claire
was a difference maker tonight
going forward and provided us
with good chances in the box.
The entire defense held our
shape well....well done "D".
Cowan and Carly both had a
couple saves and performed
well......hats off to the
backline and our keeps for a

Mount Si's soccer
season ends in heartbreak
By: Rhett Workman -
SnoValleySports.BlogSpot.com 11.03.09
Despite a heroic effort, the Mount Si
Wildcats' girls soccer season ended in
heartbreak last night as they fell to
Sammamish in a shootout.
Sammamish won 2-1, with the shootout
going 4-1 in favor of the Totems. Lauren
Snead's goal with nine minutes left
aided the Wildcats and forced overtime.
Anna Geldenhuys, who scored the lone
goal last week when the Totems beat
Mount Si 1-0, scored Sammamish's goal on
a penalty kick.
With the game tied, the two teams went
to overtime, then to a second overtime,
before the shootout was called. Laura
Barnes was the lone scorer in the
shootout for Mount Si, whose season
ended at 5-9-3. The Wildcats will have
some holes to fill, but look for some
players to emerge next season,
specifically goalie Carly Weidenbach,
forward Miranda Rawlings, and midfielder
Barnes, who will lead next year's
returning group.

commentary: Get rid of the shootout in
the girls' soccer playoffs
By: Rhett Workman -
SnoValleySports.BlogSpot.com 11.03.09
Last night's game between
the Wildcats and Totems ended a way that
we wish it wouldn't have ended: in
heartbreak for Mount Si because of a
loss in a shootout.
One of our pet peeves, and this is true
whether it's hockey or high school
soccer, is that
you let the players
decide the game on the field.
Not with a shootout which if you lose
can end your season just like that.
Mount Si worked very hard to get the
game to overtime, then to have that, and
their season, go out the window with one
simple series of kicks, is just awful.
Even more so on the six seniors whose
high school careers ended last night.
And even more so on one senior
specifically, and we're talking about
Marika Loudenback, who didn't deserve to
see her season end like this, unable to
stop those shots and keep her team's
dream alive. One guesses it was a long
night afterwards for all the ladies, but
maybe especially so for Loudenback.

KINGCO 3A PLAYOFFS
MOUNT SI WILDCATS VS.
SAMMAMISH TOTEMS
SAMMAMISH HS - BELLEVUE -
7:00 P.M. KICK
The Wildcats and Totems
played just last Tuesday; Mount Si fell
in the game 1-0 to Sammamish, as star
Anna Geldenhuys scored in the 70th
minute. The Wildcats will have to stop
her if they have any chance of
succeeding. Another thing Mount Si will
have to do is up the intensity. The
theme of the postgame comments after
last Thursday's game was they needed to
see the intensity shown in the last 15
minutes of the Senior Night game against
Bellevue, a 2-1 loss, show up for the
full 80 tonight. Intensity and
consistency have been big issues for
this team this year, so this is not new.
The question will be is can they walk
the talk?
Mount Si will need to win three straight
games, first tonight, then Wednesday
night at either Juanita or Liberty (we
think Liberty since they have the better
talent in our view) and then again on
Saturday against a Metro opponent. So
the road will be tough, but this is a
second half team so maybe they will pick
it up.

10.21.09 - MSHS vs Juanita HS
"We have got the momentum
rolling.....another "W"! 3-0-1 in our last four games and
four consecutive games with a shut-out...very nicely done by
the girls tonight. We mirrored each others play in the 1st
half and felt the starting lineup really came out in the 2nd
half with some fire. Great game tonight from our backline,
both keepers, and Jessie Hargett. I thought Jess has been an
enormous boost for us in her new role with four games under
her belt and we are really seeing a lot of distribution out
of the back because of her play. It was great to see that
winning goal by Miranda for various reasons....the first
varsity goal is always the hardest and a game winner is
especially special. 78th minute.....a gorgeous run and
finish to top it all. Lex is also playing very strong in her
holding mid role (physical player and holds possession
well). Snead (got the assist) and Robbins had very strong
2nd half's and contributed to our attack on several runs.
This puts us in the 3rd seed with two games remaining and a
shot to steal that 2nd position and home field advantage.
Good game tonight girls....the coaching staff is proud of
your efforts this evening".

10.15.09 - MSHS vs Interlake HS
"We played well enough tonight to get the "W" but, at times
looked sluggish. We could have really penetrated the
attacking third all night by pushing forward better which
results in better movement off the ball and communication.
This has been better of late but, tonight was missing at
times. We have a big game next week vs Juanita and need to
start the prep process for a game that will be very up
tempo. With the win tonight, we are now in the 3rd slot
with 2 points behind 2nd. These next two weeks ahead are
all about playoff positioning.....home field to the 2nd seed
which is always a big plus. I thought Molly Sellers spelled
nicely this evening as did Alyssa again. This is our 3rd
consecutive game with a shut-out....tonight going to
Weidenbach who played well. This season is in some ways
mirroring last years 5-0-1- 2nd half run. We have to keep
this going one match at a time".

Three is a magic
number
Mount Si girls soccer 3-3-3
after huge week
By: Rhett
Workman -
SnoValleySports.BlogSpot.com
10.16.09
Mount Si’s girls soccer team had
a solid week, and now they have
a favorite number: three.
Three wins, three losses and
three ties is the record for
Mount Si after a week which
started out with another
potentially season-defining
game, this one against Mercer
Island.
Against the top team in the
league and among the best in the
state, the Wildcats, last
Tuesday in front of a large
crowd as part of SVYSA Youth
Appreciation Night, played hard
and got a big goal from a key
junior to post the upset win.
Alexis Pearlstein scored off a
feed from Laura Barnes in the
second half to lift the Wildcats
to the 1-0 win over the
Islanders. “We can get this ship
steered in the right direction
and tonight was just a little
taste of what we can do,” said
Mount Si coach Darren Brown, and
he praised Pearlstein.
“Pearlstein’s been playing great
soccer. She’s my wrecking crew,
my physical force in the middle
and she’s taking on a little
(Katie) Woolsey / Kali Roestel
in her. She’s just tough as
nails and loves the tough
assignment.”
The team won despite not having
their top two assistant coaches,
as both Ben Tomlisson and Tom
Burford missed the game as they
served one-game red card
suspensions following their
controversial red card ejections
in the Wildcats’ previous game
October 8 against Liberty.
Pearlstein was thrilled at her
team’s accomplishment. “It feels
great knowing we can accomplish
a lot by ourselves,” she said.
Last Thursday, Mount Si rolled
into Interlake and picked up a
2-0 win. That said, Brown thinks
the Wildcats may have taken a
small step backwards. "We played
well enough tonight to get the
"W" but, at times looked
sluggish,” Brown said in
comments on the Mount Si girls’
soccer website.
Even with that, Mount Si finds
itself in third place, right
behind Sammamish, so if the team
keeps winning, the Wildcats look
as if they may host opening
round KingCo Tournament games on
their home field as the #2 seed.
Mount Si hosts Juanita next
week. The game on Tuesday begins
at 7:30 p.m.

"Wow! Great performance tonight...thought
we should have had 3 or 4 tonight but, a win is a win and
against the 5th ranked team in the state.....we have the
ship on track. We are playing with much better pace and
poise over the last two matches. I think the girls are
really realizing their potential and what they can
accomplish if they play together. Very proud of the way we
came out of the gates tonight. Very strong performances by
many but, Lex and Jess really had a strong games and gave
the MI attack fits. Warnke had another stellar game in the
back and has been a real catalyst for our back 4. I thought
Hailey provided a presence up top by really working hard
holding up possession for our shape to get into the
attacking third. Meghan gave us a lot of energy for 80
minutes and Alyssa Proudfoot had a great performance tonight
spelling in the middle of the pitch. Lets keep this winning
streak alive and stick to our 2nd half goals....one game at
a time."

"The intensity is back. That is Wildcat soccer! I thought
everyone came out strong and played a good match tonight.
Felt our backline was superb. Warnke was on her "A" game
and Jessie Hargett was outstanding in the stopper role for
us. Great distribution and really played the way I have
been wanting to see from Jess all year. Our midfield played
with a boost of energy and were getting after the 50-50's.
Hailey Conway, Daniella Romo, and Miranda were all
effective. Hailey did a great job battling a very physical
defender for 90 minutes and held her possession well. I
thought we had three really good scoring chances
tonight....Barnes set piece, Romos shot that just went wide
in OT, and again Conway's breakaway that I thought a PK
should have resulted. Lex played physical and strong in her
role and was just what I wanted from her...she is great in
that holding mid position. The Duncan twins spelled nicely
for Chase and Besmer and really gave us another element that
I like going forward. Very poised and controlled, contained
well, and got forward with pace. Overall despite the tie
result...VERY PROUD of the performance tonight. Good way to
start the 2nd half....we play like this and there will be
good results ahead. Good effort tonight ladies.

We have just completed the 1st half and with the loss to
Bellevue- there will be some changes in our lineup and our
direction going forward. We are no where near playing
to the level that I expect us to be at and most of that is
pure execution and mental focus. This second half we
will be getting back to our rotation like we had during the
preseason. I have held back my frosh and younger kids
for half the season by breaking them in slowly but, they are
ready now to see an increase in minutes. We worked on
goal setting for the 2nd half of the season and look to put
up better numbers ahead.

Mount Si
senior girls soccer player Meghan Travis
has worked the last four years for a
chance to be a game-changer on the
field. Last night, she was that in more
ways than one.
Travis
scored two goals, but it was a play
early in the second half that she was
involved in which ultimately changed the
course of the game, and now, maybe an
entire season.
Mount Si,
behind the two Travis tallies took a 2-0
lead on Sammamish, but saw the Totems
score four unanswered goals - three
after that fateful play - to take the
4-2 win.
"We had the bull by the horns and we let
this one go. We beat ourselves,” said a
disappointed Mount Si coach Darren Brown.

Played well in the first
half.....second half another story. Communication went out
the window, movement off the ball, and our game plan was
forgotten. This cannot happen. We have played two games
during this season where we should have "W's" and we really
beat ourselves. Meghan Travis had two great goals and was
good to see her going.

minutes of the season to start the match...then, our
movement off the ball went down and we stopped working for
each other. I really thought after our first goal that we
were going to close the deal but, we have seen this before.
We have to possess and not go into a state of panic when we
are in the trenches. This is not just a soccer lesson but, a
lesson in life. When things get tough....you need to dig
deep. This goes hand in hand with mental focus as well".

The Wildcats got goals from Laura Barnes
and Lauren Snead as Mount Si's defense
did a good job shutting down the
Patriots' most dangerous offensive
weapon, sophomore Cassidy Nangle. "We

but we did a good job of containing
Nangle," said Mount Si coach Darren

09.21.09 - MSHS vs Interlake HS
The girls were a little
flat tonight. We had some moments where we played well but,
we need to attack the box with more speed. We had a handful
of opportunities that were wasted by runs that were not
created or being behind the ball. We did some things well
that we will feed off of going into Thursdays contest. It
was great to see Hailey get off with her first finish this
season.....just a matter of time. I liked to see that. I
thought Kelly Besmer was electric tonight. Very big game.
The 2nd goal by Snead was a great finish....Lauren always
puts herself in a good position to score and I have to say
that is a scorer mentality. I would like to see more scoring
opps next match. Thought there was good service but,
finishing was not strong. We will take the "W" and look
forward.

We played a good
1st half.....2nd half was a let down.
We played a 40 minute game tonight. 2nd half
was purely won by Mercer Island and they came out
strong.....we could not hold possession. I said before that
Mary Hill and Erin Bourgenon were two of the top 10 players
in the league. You can add another in Haas #4 up top. Caused
us fits all night with her size and quick first step.
Warnke, Chase, and Besmer again had a great game in the back
but, we lost A LOT tonight in the midfield and up top could
hold possession mostly due to the strong play by Erin #9.
Hill has really matured into a force...reminds me of Stanton
of last year in this years league. Mercer Island is
tough.....a lot of that youth they had before has grown up
and are now seasoned Seniors. From the looks of things
early......it is going to be a very tough conference again.
Sammamish is a returning state playoff team and Bellevue
will always be difficult.

"We did some good things tonight. Had some scoring chances
as this games momentum swung back and forth most of the
night but, we did a good job of containing Nangle. Kudos to
our backline for doing a great job. Marika had a great save
in the 2nd overtime where we looked really flat as a team.
Hailey Conway had a great game up top and really put in an
effort tonight. I felt Miranda Rawlings was exceptional on
the outside......blazing speed and very good runs getting
forward. I thought that shot near the end of regulation
with six remaining was going in. She hit it too well which
did not provide any give off the far post. Lauren Snead and
Barnes provided great goals.....that got us on the board.
Laura's run towards goal was outstanding. I thought the
combo of Barnes and Conway was effective and the work rate
was top notch.

We played better tonight.....7 starters got rest tonight for
tonight's opener and the 6 girls called up for last night's
match did a good job. Real proud of the performance they
gave. I thought Brittany Duncan looked exceptionally well
tonight starting on the outside flank and was often matched
up with Katie Woodman and Brittany did a good job of holding
her down. We had more scoring opportunities tonight but,
could not finish. I thought Lex did a great job in the
center midfield.....great distribution and was a presence.
Tomorrow night is our league opener......when the games
count.

"We ran into a buzz saw this afternoon vs Skyline. Very
talented team to say the least. Tied 0-0 thru 33 minutes of
play and then the flood gates opened on us. You have to
take the positive out of a contest like this and that is we
have seen two of the top 5 4A TEAMS IN THE STATE. Skyline
being the defending state champion. We will be ready for
league play as there is not a team in the league that
contain that kind of speed, strength, and size. The defense
played well today and I felt bad for the amount of pressure
that they faced for 80 minutes but, this will be good down

09.11.09 - MSHS vs Eastlake
Eastlake was a very sound team and it is evident why they
are ranked 4th in 4A. Three D-1 Recruits and a handful of
top tier talent which stretched out our formation all night
long and gave us fits. That being said, it was good for the
girls to experience a team like this caliber in the pre
season. Between Eastlake and Skyline, they will not face
another team of that caliber in 3A competition. We had some
good play from some players last night and some that did not
have their "A" game which happens. What concerned me was
the scoring times from Eastlake connecting in the 1st minute
of the match and a minute after our neutralizer by Barnes.
That is mental toughness which we need to discuss. I
thought our communication in the 1st half was sub par and
Eastlake controlled possession for at least 80% of the match
last. There were some holes that were exposed during the
course of the night which were evident and will be taken
care of. I am looking for a better showing against the top
team in the state.....Skyline on Saturday.

09.10.09 - MSHS vs Lake Washington
"The
girls did a great job tonight with our effort and
created some good scoring opportunities. I was pleased
with our contribution from our starting eleven as well
as all of our players tonight coming off the bench.
Hailey Conway and Alexis Pearlstein did a good job of
penetrating the defensive third and getting forward.
Our midfield was effective in the middle of the pitch
with Barnes, Jess, Taylor, Snead, and Travis working on
both sides of the ball. The back three were physical
and looked poised throughout the night. I thought Haley
Chase, Taylor Warnke, Kelly Besmer, Ashley Davis, and
Molly Sellers give us a physical presence and I liked
what they provided for 80 minutes. Warnke will be an
effective weapon this year on sets and is very
intelligent in the back.....a great game tonight. Both
keepers performed well and also real proud of what they
brought to the table. Hats off to our four freshmen for
getting the jitters out....the first game is always the
most rattling and they really brought an element to the
pitch tonight. Miranda with two assists.....not bad for
a first game. Daniella has worked hard over the summer
and has created a shot for herself....just a matter of
time before she gets some goals for Mount Si. Good to
see Snead start off the year with a great goal of her
own.....after all of those post shots we had
tonight....the 2nd goal was some relief.
I thought all 18 really contributed
tonight but, I have to give the player of the match to
Jessie Hargett. Very smooth, worked hard defensively
and really was a difference maker in the attacking third
tonight. The first goal was an electric touch in the
far post from Rawlings that got us going. Next up.....
the Seattle Times favorite....Eastlake ranked #4 in the
State in the 4A KingCo Conference. We will be up for
the challenge.

Workman - Sno-Valley Sports 09.09.09
Mount Si's girls soccer
team opened the 2009 campaign with a 2-0
win last night over the Lake Washington
Kangaroos at Mount Si High School.
Jessie Hargett and Lauren Snead scored
the goals for the Wildcats, who used a
special night from a newcomer to help
get the job done.
Both goals were assisted by freshman
Miranda Rawlings, who was playing her
first high school game along with
several other frosh.
Hargett scored first, on a one-timer in
the 32nd minute, and Snead wrapped it up
in the 73rd with a punch-in into the net
past the LW goalie. The team as a whole
played a crisp, consistent game which,
if they are able to maintain that the
entire season, could make them a
dangerous team come crunch time late in
October.

AUGUST 2009
August 20, 2009 Written by Ryan Piersol -
SnoValley Star
Think winning a conference championship for the first time ever solves all the problems of a program?
The Mount Si girls soccer team had perhaps its most successful season ever last fall, capturing the KingCo title and advancing to the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Still, all that winning did was leave a taste for much more in the mouth of the Wildcats.
“It gave us a lot of confidence,” head coach Darren Brown said. “But we haven’t gotten past that hump of getting into the (state) championship match or of winning it all. That’s where we need to get.”
To do that this season, Mount Si will need to find a ton of scoring in a hurry. Of the many goals the Wildcats scored a year ago, 82 percent of them were booted through by outgoing seniors, including league Player of the Year Nikki Stanton.
That’s left Brown in search of scoring options.
“It’s all about who our goal scorer is going to be. Who’s going to be the two, three kids who finish for us. At this point, I can’t really say,” Brown said. “We have some options, but we’re going to have to have some kids step up.”
Fortunately, the Wildcats appear to have a defense that can carry them in the early going. Goalkeeper Marika Loudenback returns, as do starters Hailey Conway, Kelly Besmer, Ashley Davis and Jessie Hargett on defense. Hargett may move to midfield, where she’ll be joined by Taylor Robbins and Laura Barnes, who each were standouts as freshmen a year ago.
In the front, all that’s known now is that Alexis Pearlstein and Daniella Romo will be relied upon heavily.
“We’re good in the back. We’re very solid there,” Brown said. “But we have our work cut out for us, there’s no doubt about it. It’s definitely within our reach, but it’s not going to be as easy as it was last year. If we have one or two girls who can carry the scoring opportunity that Nikki provided us last year, we’ll be fine. But, if we can’t finish, it’ll be tough.”
Brown said he was impressed by the summer performances of several of the team members, most notably Hargett, Pearlstein and Romo. He also said that several incoming freshman could see playing time right away.
Mount Si could need all the help it’s going to get, because the league is expected to be a rigid one.
“It’s going to be a really tough league this year,” Brown said. “Liberty is up-and-coming, Mercer Island returns two of its top players and Sammamish went to state last year, so they should be good.”
Mount Si will hold its tryouts from Aug. 24-26 from 9-11:30 a.m. in the stadium.
